(Grand Canyon Village, AZ – Las Vegas, NV)
I woke up and thought I’d let Andrew have a lie in. It turns out that he was awake and thought he’d let me have a lie in… The weather summary amused me today, suggesting that staying in with a blanket was the best option. Nevertheless, I got up at 8.30, more than confident we could be out by the required 11am. There were still morning rituals to be adhered to and so I made coffee, got dressed, and headed out to the balcony for a relaxing half hour. After that it was time for showers, packing and loading up the car, and leaving Maswik Lodge behind.

Then, after one last look at the Canyon near Yavapai point, looking at a much hazier view than yesterday, we headed south towards Williams.

Our first stop was our customary visit for brunch at the Route 66 diner. As good as ever, especially after the canteen-style offer of Grand Canyon.

Then it was on towards Las Vegas. The road was very busy with trucks, which surprised us a bit for a Saturday. The clouds got darker, and lower, as we drove on. We had a quick stop at Kingman where there was the start of a light drizzle. We continued on, although I wondered what Google was up to when we sailed past our usual exit. It took us along some back roads, with plenty of signs saying ‘do not enter when flooded’, not usually a concern, but the rain was by more getting much heavier. I’m still not sure why it sent us that way, but we’re clearly weren’t the only ones following the advice. Eventually, afters few more turns, we turned onto the familiar road that heads north-west towards the Hoover Dam. There wasn’t a lot to see. Rain. Mist. And very green desert vegetation. There was a vague sighting of the Colorado River as we passed the ‘scenic’ view.

We crossed Hoover Dam, passed a lot of power lines. and soon after that were descending into Henderson, where we are staying. We unloaded our belongings one last time, and decided to stay in and relax for a couple of hours before dinner.

We went for dinner at 5pm, which felt like 6pm, because we’ve gone back an hour by crossing into Nevada. We drove 2 minutes to Denny’s, which we would normally have walked to, but it was still raining a lot. We were back in our room, wondering if it was bed time yet, by 6pm! Every year we say that we should include more rest and do less energetic stuff, but every time the scenery entices us to keep going. We may as well fall asleep as early as we want, as it will be closer to UK time…
