Old Familiar. Day 1: Southbound Departure

THURSDAY, 30 OCTOBER 2025

(Home, UK – Heathrow, UK)

The day was spent working, interspersed with moments of adding random items to the suitcases or hand luggage piles. After tea and finishing work at 6pm, we finished getting ready, emptied the fridge, did the washing up and zipped up the cases. By 7.30pm we were in the car and ready to go.

Google estimated a 3.5 hour drive and, even with a short stop, that was exactly what it took. The motorways gradually got less busy, although the variable speed limits kept varying, generally without any apparent reason. The junction off the M25 to the airport was closed, necessitating a detour. I’m sure this was the same as a year ago… At least when we got to the terminal the moving walkways were working, so they have fixed those since last year. All told,  we were parked in the car park, had walked to T2 and had arrived in our room by 11.30pm.

Sadly the bar and room service close at 11pm (which we think is odd for an airport hotel with people coming and going). Luckily, I had the foresight to put a beer in for each of us, and we had a few (very random) snacks, either what was left in the fridge (feta parcels and blueberries) or what could be acquired at the services when we stopped (crisps and chocolate).

And that’s it. We don’t need an early start tomorrow, so we can now relax and hopefully sleep well.
